Dr. Thomann serves as Director of Occupational and Environmental Safety at Duke University/Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He is a recognized expert in Environmental and Earth Sciences, along with Occupational Medicine and Safety. He has authored or co-authored over 100 publications and presentations and has forty years experience in the public health field. Dr. Thomann is also an Assistant Professor at both Duke University and the Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. Thomann received a Bachelor of Science in 1971 from Florida Atlantic University and began working as a medical technologist for the Boca Raton Community Hospital, initially in Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology before moving to Microbiology. In 1976, he earned his Master of Science while serving as Chief Microbiologist at the hospital. Dr. Thomann received his Doctor of Public Health in 1983. During this time, he performed as the Director of Medical Center Environmental Safety and Hospital Epidemiology at the Duke University Medical Center for ten years before accepting his current position.
Dr. Thomann currently sits on the Oversight Committee, Laboratory Facility Guidelines for Planning and design, International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories; NIH Blue Ribbon Committee for the Risk Assessment of the National Emerging Infectious Disease Laboratory at Boston University; Indoor Air Quality Position Document Committee, AHSRAE; and Environmental Health Committee, ASHRAE.
Tim is the President of Micro Air, Inc. In addition to overseeing overall corporate activities, he has directly managed hundreds of indoor air quality projects throughout the United States, including residential and commercial office buildings, hotels, health care facilities, educational institutions, and manufacturing and industrial properties. He has also worked on asbestos projects as a supervisor, inspector, and designer in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Tim is also licensed as a Mold Assessment Consultant in the State of Texas.
Tim is Micro Air, Inc.’s Operations Manager. He has directed and managed over 300 indoor air quality investigations including mold assessments in facilities ranging from a few thousand square feet to over one million square feet. He holds a Certificate in Hazardous Materials Management from the Masters Program at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. In 1990, Tim obtained certification from the State of Indiana to perform asbestos surveys in public buildings. He went on to became one of the first individuals in Indiana to receive the Radon Proficiency Analytical Certification in 1994. In addition to his asbestos and radon functions within the organization, Tim became certified by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, one of the first states to have a certification program, to conduct lead-based paint surveys in residential buildings. Previously, he was Micro Air, Inc.’s Lead Division Manager and conducted Phase I Environmental Assessments for property transfers. He has given numerous presentations and demonstrations regarding lead-based paint.
Dave is a Microbiologist at Micro Air, Inc. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh and later received a Master of Science degree in Microbiology from Clemson University. Dave has over 6 years of experience in performing indoor air quality and microbial investigations within industrial, commercial, and residential structures throughout the United States. He has also performed epidemiological evaluations for outbreaks of Legionella as well as nosocomial infections within hospitals. Dave serves on a catastrophe assistance team, where duties include developing scopes of work for areas of damage, preparing microbial impact statements, project monitoring and oversight, and quality control assessment of work by contractors. He is proficient within Micro Air, Inc.’s microbiology laboratory, where his responsibilities include QA/QC correspondent. He led accreditation efforts for Micro Air Inc.’s microbiology laboratory through the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s EMLAP program, becoming the first in the state of Indiana to receive accreditation.
Asbestos & Lead Management
Tony is the Asbestos and Lead Division Manager and is responsible for coordinating all asbestos and lead-based paint inspections and Phase 1 environmental site assessments. He is also the primary hazardous waste contact for Micro Air, Inc. He is currently certified as a Senior Level, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management. Tony has over 18 years of practical experience in the environmental consulting field.
Don is an Assistant Project Manager at Micro Air. He was initially trained as an analyst for identification of air samples by PCM (phase contrast microscopy) enabling him to perform air monitoring and analysis at the job site. This resulted in a more rapid and current indication of the on-going projects. Don is currently certified as an asbestos building inspector in Indiana and Michigan and has completed over a million square feet of building surveys. Don is also in charge of Micro Air's CAD department with over 20 years experience in drafting. His detailed CAD drawings are used as bid documents for restoration contractors.
Shawn is a Field Technician at Micro Air. He is certified by the State of Indiana to perform asbestos surveys in public buildings, and currently performs air monitoring and analysis at job sites resulting in a more rapid and current indication of the on-going projects. For a period of time, Shawn was responsible for the placement of radon canisters after receiving the Radon Proficiency Analytical Certification in 2002. In addition to his asbestos and radon functions within the organization, Shawn is certified by the States of Indiana and Illinois to conduct lead-based paint surveys and risk assessments in public and residential buildings. He has frequently assisted in conducting Phase I Environmental Assessments for property transfers.
Industrial Hygiene
Ron is the Senior Health and Safety Consultant at Micro Air. His primary client is Cummins Engine Company where he is formulating the lockout/tagout procedures for the Cummins Technical Center. Ron has over 40 years of experience in safety, environmental, and human resources management with both Cummins, Inc. and Valeo Sylvania, LLC. He has been involved with safety and environmental management at the plant level, regional level and corporate level.
Laboratory
Betsie is Micro Air, Inc.’s Laboratory Manager. In addition to supervising the asbestos and microbiology labs, she is the Quality Assurance Coordinator/Technical Manager for the asbestos lab and the Deputy Quality Assurance Coordinator/Technical Manager for the microbiology lab. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health and Environmental Science from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and is trained to analyze every type of microbial and asbestos sample that comes through our laboratory. Betsie is also a Certified Radon Measurement Provider by the State of Indiana and by the National Environmental Health Association’s National Radon Proficiency Program.
Deanna is a Certified Radon Measurement Provider by the State of Indiana and by the National Environmental Health Association’s National Radon Proficiency Program and performs most of the field radon measurements for our laboratory.
Elloree is a Laboratory Analyst in Micro Air, Inc.'s Microbiology Laboratory. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Butler University in 2009. She currently analyzes all types of microbial samples received by the laboratory including direct spore trap, viable mold and bacteria and pool and drinking water samples. She also analyzes air asbestos samples received in the laboratory.
Jeff is a Laboratory Analyst in Micro Air, Inc.'s Asbestos Laboratory. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Toledo in August 2011. He currently analyzes bulk samples received in the laboratory. He is also training to analyze direct spore trap samples in the Microbiology Laboratory.
Phillip is a Laboratory Technician in Micro Air, Inc.'s Asbestos Laboratory. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Indiana University in May 2009 and a Masters of Biology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in May 2011. He currently analyzes bulk asbestos and pool and drinking water samples received in the laboratory.
